President, Liberty Mutual Canada
Garth Pepper, President of Liberty Mutual Canada, believes several characteristics breed success a dynamic team culture that embraces a sense of drive and energy; an initiative-taking mentality; an inquisitive mindset and a hunger to succeed. “A team of individuals possessing these qualities means that everyone is engaged and looking to strengthen and build strategic partnerships with Liberty Mutual Canada’s brokers and insureds,” Garth says. “This also means the team is looking for more efficient ways of doing business, as well as ways to take ownership of the company’s profitable growth,” he adds. Garth speaks from personal experience, having worked on both the brokerage and insurance company side of the business for more than 25 years, in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. He adds that an unwavering commitment to excellent customer service coupled with a strong underwriting discipline must also lie beneath these characteristics. “Customer service at its most basic level is doing the simple things really well,” says Garth. “Anyone who deals with Liberty knows we prioritize responding to their questions, returning phone calls and responding to emails, along with meeting deadlines and providing accurate policy documentation, all within a timely manner.” Garth notes that a dynamic and experienced team that possesses top technical knowledge and an ability to evaluate risk and provide solutions, combined with Liberty Mutual Canada’s broad array of product offerings, differentiates Liberty Mutual Canada in the marketplace. “Seeking excellence, working with drive, energy, initiative and a desire to succeed are goals that everyone at Liberty Mutual Canada strives for,” says Garth.

Chief Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer
Jessica Seppi, Chief Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, has over 15 years of industry experience with a varied background, including claims, underwriting, in-house legal, compliance and regulatory work. "My role at LIU Canada stretches beyond the company's overall compliance oversight, and also includes providing legal support and advice, as well as regulatory and strategic advice to all of the underwriting groups, senior management and other corporate departments", says Jessica. "Providing these services to all of my business clients is key to the overall service we bring to our brokers and insureds". Jessica's dedication and commitment to providing assistance within product development, negotiations and legal analysis within complex areas of law and business are also key to her role at LIU Canada, as Chief Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, "Brokers and clients working with LIU Canada know that our commitment extends beyond our underwriting expertise but it also includes access to the experience and talent on the Senior Management Team. This is what differentiates LIU Canada from our competitors and I am proud to play a part in that difference".
Senior Vice President, Alternative Risk Management
Mike Weiss emphasizes his team’s focus on customer service and creativity in finding solutions. “We put other options on the table,” says Mike, a Senior Vice President with LIU’s alternative risk management division, which includes Surety, Fronting Captives and Self Insured Programs, US Workers Compensation, and Aviation. “The broker will say ‘this is what I’m looking for’ and we’ll say ‘here’s what you requested, as well as alternative options to consider’.” Mike says this is part of LIU’s overall high level of commitment to service, which he characterizes as a “key differentiator,” noting that brokers recognize his team for their willingness to be creative. Another point of differentiation that is particular to his department’s product lines is that LIU is the only company in Canada that has a team that underwrites U.S. workers’ compensation. “We’ve won business purely on that distinction,” says Mike.
Vice President, Energy & Construction
Richard Ortner has a specialized knowledge of the unique exposures presented by oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, and construction risks. This strong knowledge of technical risk and the Canadian marketplace coupled with a broader global view gives Richard a unique perspective. “I’ve come to appreciate that no two insurance clients or programs are alike, and they all deserve specialized attention and a personalized, flexible, and innovative approach in order to develop an insurance solution that is right for each of them,” says Richard, who manages LIU’s Energy and Construction property insurance business written in the LIU Toronto office, and oversees LIU’s energy and construction product lines in Canada. Richard brings over 25 years of experience in the energy, construction, and property insurance business to his role. In addition to taking a customized approach with each client, he notes his team is also willing to support clients throughout the market cycle. “We always help them find an innovative solution – our clients appreciate our consistency and the longevity of our relationships,” he says.
Senior Vice President, Commercial Lines
Robert Marsh brings a passion for collaboration and innovation to his role as Senior Vice President of LIU Canada’s Commercial Lines. “Our Commercial Lines group is driven to ensure they understand the many challenges facing our brokers and clients,” Robert says. “We focus on forming market leading partnerships by finding holistic solutions that bring together multiple product lines.” Robert adds “clients and brokers benefit from LIU Canada’s entrepreneurial culture, local autonomy over underwriting decisions and can also leverage our affiliation with the broader Liberty Mutual Group.” He adds that LIU Canada is very nimble in terms of the way the company transacts business and makes decisions, which makes it stand out from the competition. “We work hard to continuously earn and maintain the trust of our brokers and policyholders,” says Robert. “It’s critical for us to stay hungry in a constantly evolving market.”
Vice President, Human Resources
Hiring the right people, in the right role, at the right time, is a key area of focus for Sandy Bernier, Vice President, Human Resources, LIU Canada. "People are LIU Canada's greatest asset. Senior Vice President Finance & CFO
As CFO of LIU Canada, Sunil Motwani’s role is multi-faceted, and includes ensuring the company properly manages both current and upcoming risks. Sunil is well-positioned for this role as the company’s financial steward, having worked in finance and accounting for many years both within Canada and abroad, including nearly 19 years at LIU Canada. His expertise is a huge benefit to both brokers and clients. “Clients rely on us to be there for them and my experience helps us to be forward looking, ensuring we are always adequately capitalized,” Sunil says. Sunil also works closely with the company’s President on business development. “I know what drives our business, our key performance indicators, and I’m there to alert the senior management team if I see any issues,” he says. Sunil notes that as a financially stable organization, LIU Canada delivers on its promise of being there for clients during their time of need. “Our clients know they can count on us to help them mitigate their risks so they can focus on their core business,” he says.
Vice President, Marketing & Business Development
Susan DuHamel knows that strong, sustainable brands aren't a product of clever marketing. As VP, Marketing and Business Development, Susan works to ensure that all brokers understand the range of products LIU Canada offers and what makes us unique. "LIU Canada has been very successful since opening its doors in 1993 by concentrating on the art of underwriting, exceptional service and strong relationships," says Susan. Senior Vice President, Specialty Lines
With a background in both claims and underwriting, Todd Armstrong brings a unique perspective to his role as Senior Vice President of LIU Canada’s Specialty Lines. With this dual background, he encourages his team to understand the practical application of a contract and how it meets the needs of LIU Canada’s insureds. “For a broker and insured, contract relevance and certainty is paramount,” Todd explains. He adds “We aim to understand the client’s needs first, and then introduce products and solutions that meet those needs, all while placing emphasis on eliminating ambiguities within the language of the contract.” The end result is peace of mind for brokers when it comes to the placement of insurance with LIU Canada. “We give brokers confidence that LIU Canada understands the risk and has the expertise to customize coverage to meet the insured’s needs,” Todd says.
Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary
After 23 years in the insurance industry, mostly in commercial lines and reinsurance , Walter Fransen, Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary, knows how important the right corporate culture is to the success of an organization. "I'm very impressed with the people and the culture of LIU Canada. There is a strong sense of teamwork, collaboration combined with a high degree of professionalism, where everyone is working on a common goal – to exceed our customers' expectations", says Walter. Walter says, "The actuary's job is to make sense out of random insurance data, using analytics to find the underlying structure, based on the patterns we observe in the data." The Actuarial team works with claims experience to understand the client's history, then work together with the underwriters to apply that claims history and understand the current risk profile of the client, in order to come up with the right price and creative solutions for that client, which is critical to the success of the business. "The Actuarial team also partners with Finance, to set the company-wide reserves to ensure the organization is adequately capitalized to give our clients the peace of mind knowing that we have the capital to back up our promises" adds Walter.
